Japan’s fashion market is showing signs of a dramatic consumer rebound in the opening months of 2026. Following a sluggish performance in the first month of the year, provisional data from Japan's Ministry of Finance reveals a sharp spike in apparel and accessory imports. In February 2026 alone, the value of inbound fashion shipments to the archipelago surged by 22.9 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 328,148 million yen (~$2.06 billion). This significant jump indicates a renewed appetite among Japanese consumers despite a fluctuating global economic landscape.

This surge was not limited to finished garments. The upstream textile sector also posted impressive growth, with imports of textile yarn and fabric leaping by 25.6 percent to 98,075 million yen. Overall, apparel and accessories now account for roughly 3.4 percent of Japan’s total imports, which stood at 9.51 trillion yen for the second month of the year. This positive trend follows a period of moderate growth in 2025, where annual apparel imports rose 4.5 percent to a total value of $24.30 billion. Economic analysts view these figures as a strong indicator that Japan’s domestic demand for foreign textile products remains resilient, even in the face of global logistical challenges.

In contrast to the stellar import performance, Japan’s textile export sector faced mounting pressure. Shipments of textile yarn and fabric abroad saw a decline of 8.5 percent, falling to 63,654 million yen in February 2026. However, Japan’s industrial technology sector maintained its foothold, with textile machinery exports growing slightly by 0.4 percent. This suggests a strategic shift in Japan’s industry, focusing more on the consumption of finished goods and the provision of specialized machinery rather than serving as a raw material exporter.

Looking back, these fluctuations represent a consistent recovery since the 2023–24 fiscal period, when clothing imports had previously declined by 1.7 percent. The recovery that began in fiscal 2024–25 appears to have hit a high note in the first quarter of 2026. With consumption projections continuing to strengthen, Japan is expected to remain a key destination for global garment manufacturers, particularly from Southeast Asia and China. This February surge is anticipated to act as a catalyst for Japan’s fashion retail growth throughout the remainder of 2026, solidifying its position as one of the world's largest apparel consumption hubs.
