Indonesian Ministry of Trade Supports Domestic Textile Industry Through New Regulations

Last year, the Indonesian Ministry of Trade took concrete steps to support the growth of the domestic garment industry by issuing two new regulations. These regulations, Minister of Trade Regulation No. 31 of 2023 concerning Business Licensing, Advertising, Guidance, and Supervision of Business Actors in Trade through Electronic Systems, and Minister of Trade Regulation No. 36 of 2023 related to import policies and regulations, were designed to enhance protection and supervision of the domestic garment industry.

Zulkifli, the Minister of Trade, welcomed these measures and appreciated the full support provided by the government, especially the Ministry of Trade. He emphasized the importance of issuing Minister of Trade Regulation No. 31, which regulates the procedures for direct and digital sales. This regulation brings significant changes in regulating electronic commerce and improves the previous regulation, Minister of Trade Regulation No. 50 of 2020.

Minister of Trade Regulation No. 31 of 2023 regulates the standardization of goods circulation on e-commerce platforms, governs trading practices in online stores, and creates more balanced business competition. Meanwhile, Minister of Trade Regulation No. 36 of 2023 focuses on import policies and regulations, emphasizing tightening import rules.

According to the Minister, the change from post-border import tightening to border tightening is a strategic step in enhancing supervision of imported goods. This signifies the government's commitment to protecting domestic industries from the negative impacts of excessive imports.

The issuance of these two regulations aims to fully support the domestic garment industry and encourage people to take pride in using Indonesian products. "So we are proud to buy Indonesian-made products," said Zulkifli.

It is hoped that with these stricter and clearer regulations, the domestic garment industry can grow stronger and more self-reliant, create job opportunities, and foster awareness of the importance of local products for the advancement of Indonesia's economy. These measures are part of the government's efforts to strengthen the manufacturing sector and enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market.
