Kenya is setting ambitious targets for its apparel exports, with a vision to achieve a remarkable $2 billion in exports to the United States and the European Union by 2030, according to Richard Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Export Processing Zone (EPZA). The East African nation, currently exporting apparel worth $544 million to these markets, aims to elevate this figure to $1 billion by 2025.
To materialize this ambitious growth plan, Kenya is strategizing the revival of its textile factors. The key objectives include benefiting cotton farmers, fostering the growth of local industries, and generating employment opportunities for the youth. The United States is also contributing to this endeavor by providing $55 million for the expansion of the Export Processing Zone.
The textile sector in Kenya is embracing advanced technologies, further supported by the development of the Green Energy Park in Olkaria Naivash. This initiative aims to provide a stable and renewable energy source specifically for industries within the park, particularly those engaged in apparel production.
As part of its comprehensive growth strategy, EPZA plans to significantly increase the land under cotton cultivation. Currently spanning 40,000 acres, the goal is to expand to 100,000 acres in the coming year and reach an impressive 300,000 acres within the next three years. In a bid to diversify its offerings, EPZA is in negotiations with a South Korean company to introduce the production of synthetic fibers.
Kenya's strategic focus on enhancing the textile and apparel sector not only promises economic growth but also aligns with sustainable practices. By incorporating cutting-edge technologies, renewable energy solutions, and expanding cotton cultivation, Kenya aims to position itself as a key player in the global apparel market, fostering economic development and job creation.
